(blog) My Take on the whole 49ers Colin Kaepernick vs Alex Smith situation in San Francisco

Let me start by saying that I think Alex Smith should be the starting QB for the 49ers.  But in Jim Harbaugh I trust.

Alex Smith and the 49er "D" would have won the last 3 games. Specially with Cutler out vs the Bears. The problem is CK7 brings out the energy in the fans and the team. It’s like you have a sports car you've been driving for 8 years. 6 of which have had major issue due to the mechanics working on it, so you buy a new one. All of a sudden you finally found the right mechanic and the car works great but you still have that new one just sitting there with all these new features and technology. Then the older car breaks down and you finally have an excuse to drive the new one. It’s hard to stop driving the new one when the older car gets back from the shop. To top it off, the 8 year old car you inherited it and the new one you personally picked out at the dealership.

At some point as fans we have to cheer for the logo on the jersey and not for the last name on the jersey, right?

"Alex Smith and the 49er "D" would have won the last 3 games"

I'm not going to speculate that Smith could have turned the 9ers/Rams game from a tie to a win. I'm not going to say he would have lost it either, but it's really hard to say either way.

Bears are averaging 3 sacks per game, they had none against Kaep, even though they pressured him some. Saints average about 2 sacks a game, but again had 0 on Kaep, even though they brought a LOT of pressure throughout the entire game. In the playoffs against the Saints, they sacked Smith 4 times I believe.

While Smith is a safe choice for the dink & dunk offense, that's not the exact game that Harbaugh likes to play. Look at Luck at Stanford, it was a run it down your throat, physical offensive line & run game to open up some passing and then a few deeper threats once the underneath had been established. Smith can do the first 2 parts, he doesn't have the arm ( or accuracy ) to push it down the field, he's also noticeably slower in decision making and getting the ball out ( which would be why he was on pace to lead the league in sacks...again for the second year ).

With Akers not eating his Wheaties and missing kicks he made with ease last year, we need a QB that isn't going to take a sack to get us out of the redzone or make it harder for us to get into the endzone. Going from 1st and 10 to 2nd and 20, 3+ times a game, is bad for our offense, and to say that Smith wouldn't have taken 3-4+ sacks against the Saints is just not acknowledging his his willingness to just eat the sack instead of scramble to stretch the play or even just throw the damn thing away.
